Gettin' Stuff Done

0

I've gotten to working on things a bit more.  The map has been blocked out and I tested the amount of time for the CT and EMP players to get to the different resource points.  I thought some people might be interested in hearing about them to here we go.

EMP to prime - 19.6 seconds
EMP to middle secondary (using bridge route)- 19.1 seconds
EMP to middle secondary (using secondary route)- 22.9 seconds
EMP to other secondary - 25.3

The breakable bridge route is something that I'll need to test a bit.  The obvious problem is CT can just rush and destroy the bridge right at round start.  It makes me wonder whether or not EMP can get to the bridge fast enough to protect it and start a fire fight, which would make the bridge one of the bigger fighting places on the map.  If the destruction doesn't work I think it would be possible for the map to change that route depending on each time it's played.  I haven't done anything like that before but it's something that I can look in to.  The CT times aren't as polished since CT's side is a bit more rough at the moment.

CT to middle secondary - 12.5 seconds
CT to other secondary - 10.7 seconds

In other news I've continued working on models.  It looks like a general snack/balloon/whatever it might be used for, cart will be the first I finish.

Not Much Progress

0

My amusement park map isn't progressing very much.  In fact there has been almost no progression.  This is due to two things:
1.  I've been very busy with other things
2.  I've been thinking about the scale of the map a lot.

Even though I haven't really done much of anything development related I felt like posting something.  In the layout the little area separated from the rest is going to be where the main resource point is.  On this island will be a ferris wheel.  There will be water under the bridges that connect the two portions of land.  I've been thinking about having a raft or swan boat of some sort that floats through slowly from side to side.  I might just make a non moving one, this all depends on how it changes the mood of the map.  I've been looking at hundreds of pictures of amusement parks to see if there are any common things in the layout.  That's where I got the kidney shape from originally.  Aside from that they all vary.  The thing that worries me most about this map is all of the modeling I have to do.  I don't consider myself an expert modeler at all but I do have a good bit of experience in Blender.  I just haven't done much modeling in a while or struggled with getting models into Source.  We'll see how it goes.

I'm Back

0

I was gone for a few days which is why I haven't really started on my map.  I've done some planning on paper since I was able to do that on a plane.  (It was also fun to see the reactions of people around me when I was playing Shank on my flight)  For ND_Amusement or whatever I call my map I've come up with these solid ideas:

  • The map will mainly be a kidney shape with a small island.  It'll be kind of like a yin and yang symbol but with just the black parts.
  • The small island or dot part of the map will have the Ferris wheel on it.  This will be the primary resource point.
  • The attractions in the park will include a merry go round, possibly a house of mirrors, snack stands, some sort of spinning teacup sort of ride and other things I've yet to come up with.

This is all I can say for sure for now.  I'll try to update frequently on the map.

Something Unexpected

0

I was happy and surprised today when I found out about InterWave's mapping contest.  I've been a big fan of Nuclear Dawn from the start and I've been working on and off on two maps for it already.  The contest announcement will delay my first map (ND_Forest) even more and the other, more casual map I've been working on a bit.  My other worry is that an upcoming project I'm about to start and the mapping contest might conflict a bit. I don't really mind since contests are exciting and seeing what other community members come up with will be nice.  Although I don't have much faith about placing in the top 5 I've decided to give it a shot.  My initial thought was that I might just finish up ND_Forest but that map is very small.  I'd like to make something that is more Nuclear Dawnish so I thought of an abandoned amusement park.  The only problem is I'll have to do a lot of custom modeling (and work on other custom content).  Modeling isn't the issue, it's getting the models to cooperate with the Source engine.  I've had some trouble in the past doing Blender to Source things but we'll see.  Hopefully I'll have a solid idea of what the map will be shaped like by next week.  I'll keep updating on this blog and eventually add a thread on the InterWave forums.

Edit
Had to upload this image here because it's been failing when I put it in my signature.

Re-Imagining

0

Hello.  I don't think I've gained any followers at this point but I feel the need to post this anyway.  I've decided to revamp this blog and post more regularly.  I'll start with a new introduction.  I am Deer and this is my development blog.  I'll be posting things about upcoming projects, progress on maps and various other things (sometimes video editing too).  I map using Hammer and I'm currently working on two maps for the game Nuclear Dawn.  One of which is a forest map and the other is a Quake Live inspired arena map.  I also have an upcoming project that I'll be talking about soon.  I feel like this is enough for now.  Hopefully I'll be as active as I've promised myself.
